INFORMATION & RULES
The Sverdlovsk Philharmonic and the Ural Academic Philharmonic Orchestra under the auspices of the Union of Russian composers holds the Open Contest “Peter and the Wolf 2012” (hereinafter referred to as the Contest) to composers for a composition in symphonic music for children. The Contest will be held in September 2012 in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
THE CONTEST PANEL
A Panel of Judges will be selected by the Organization Committee of the Contest (hereinafter referred as the Committee), and these judges will be esteemed people of music art of Russia, composers, conductors and musicologists.
The Selection Panel will be headed by Dmitry Liss, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Ural Academic Philharmonic Orchestra (UAPO), people’s artist of Russia, the prize-winner of the State Prize of Russia. The selection panel includes also Vladislav Kazenin, the President of the Union of Russian composers, people’s artist of Russia, Prof. Vadim Bibergan, member of the Union of Saint Petersburg’s composers, Prof. Alexander Tchaikovskiy, member of the Union of Russian composers, people’s artist of Russia, Alexander Gazeleridi, Artistic Director of creative projects, Sverdlovsk State Philharmonic, honored worker of culture in Russia. The Panel assesses the compositions of contestants, checks their compliance with the requirements of the Contest, decides on participants who enter the second round, allots diplomas and prizes of the Contest.
The panel has the right to award special prizes and to withhold some prizes and diplomas.
The principles and criteria for the selection and assessment of the compositions to enter the second round of the Contest are decided upon and approved by the panel of judges at their first meeting.
The chairperson has a decisive vote in passing the decisions within the competence of the panel.
THE COMPOSERS (AUTHORS)
The composers/authors must submit original compositions created for children audience. The duration of a composition is limited to 15 minutes.
Orchestra staff: from small symphonic to triple with type instruments. Elocutionist’s part is available. The participation of singers and choir is not provided.
No age limitations. Compositions will be accepted if they have not been previously performed at public concerts, or published by the publishing houses, or awarded at other competitions. The composers/authors may submit for consideration of the Panel of judges more than one composition.
The authors of the compositions are not limited to academic field. The compositions in different styles are submitted for consideration.
The Contest is arranged anonymous.
The Contest is arranged in Ekaterinburg in two rounds.
The music compositions that meet the requirements of the Contest are allowed to participate in the first round. The Committee has a right to nullify the application that does not meet the requirements of the Contest.
The application of the participants of the Contest is through August 31, 2012.
The first round (application and selection for the second round) is through September 10, 2012.
In the result of inspection of all applied compositions the relevant panel of judges will select not more that 5 compositions for entry into the second round of the Contest.
The results of the first round will be published through September 1, 2012 on the Web Sites of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic www.sgaf.ru www.sgafest.ru. All finalists will receive the notification mail of the Committee by electronic mail.
The second (final) round of the Contest, the summation of the Contest and the award of the authors of the best compositions will held on September 23, 2012 in the Great Hall of the Sverldovsk Philharmonic.
The compositions allowed for entry into the second round will be performed by the Ural Academic Philharmonic Orchestra at the concert on the stage of the Great Hall of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic.
The authors of the compositions admitted to the second round may be present at the final concert.
The finalists of the Contest will be given the rank of the prize-winners of the Contest.
The distribution of the prizes will be made after the second round according to the results of the audition of the author’s compositions.
The prize of the Contest is the author’s agreements with the participating composers to the amount defined by the conditions of the Contest.
The First Prize of the Panel of Judges is the author’s agreement with the composer and the participant of the second round to the amount of 90 thousand rubles and the rank of the prize-winner.
The Second Prize of the Panel of Judges is the author’s agreement with the composer and the participant of the second round to the amount of 60 thousand rubles and the rank of the prize-winner.
The Third Prize of the Panel of Judges is the author’s agreement with the composer and the participant of the second round to the amount of 30 thousand rubles and the rank of the prize-winner.
The authors of the compositions that passed the second round of the Contest but were not awarded, receive the diplomas of the Contest.
The Prize of the Audience Sympathy may be instituted at the Contest.
The sponsors, state and public institutions performed as co-founders and partners of the Contest may, with the agreement of the Committee, institute the special prizes to the participants.
The authors participating in the second round of the Contest transfer all the right of television- and/or radio broadcasting of the final round to the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic as well the rights of its filming, video- and/or audio recording and its further distribution without the payment of the fee to the contestants.
The Contest is made anonymous, the motto should be on the sent materials.
The received music material (scores and orchestral scores) are not to be returned.
The decisions of the Panel of judges are final and not to be re-examined.
The following material should be sent to the Committee:
The Envelope no. 1 should contain:
- score and orchestral score on CD (set in the computer programs Sibelius or Finale)
- score and orchestral score in printed form
- CD with the demo recording of the composition (computer or piano)
The Envelope no. 2 should contain:
- information about the applicant
- family name, given name, paternal name
- date and place of birth
- postal address
- phone number, fax number and address of the electronic mail
- short biography (arbitrary shape)
- photography, size 10 to 15 cm
- receipt for the application fee payment to the amount of 1000 rubles for citizens of Russia and 70 US dollars or 50 EUR for citizens of other countries.
The motto is indicated on the envelopes only.
The closing date for the documentation of application is August 31, 2012 (according to the stamp of the origin on the postal envelope or the date of sending via electronic mail).
